Rehabilitation

We are one of few veterinary hospitals with an in-house rehabilitation team

Physiotherapy is a vital part of rehabilitation whether that be conservative management of a long-term condition or pre and post-operative management of surgical cases. Being located within the hospital means that the team can work very closely with other departments such as orthopaedics, soft tissue, and neurology.

Our physiotherapy and hydrotherapy services are available to inpatient and outpatient clients, 6 daysa week. We also accept referrals made direct to physiotherapy and/or hydrotherapy from other practices. The team consists of three NAVP registered veterinary physiotherapists and one canine hydrotherapist.

What Conditions Does Rehabilitation Help?

Examples of the conditions the team works with include:

  • Joint dysplasia
  • Cranial cruciate ligament disease
  • Post orthopaedic surgery
  • Pre-operative conditioning
  • Postural deformities
  • Surgical and conservative spinal disease
  • Nerve damage
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Patella luxation
  • Performance management/injury prevention

Rehabilitation Facilities

  • Hydrotherapy pool

  • Underwater treadmill

  • Large indoor exercise area with rubber floor, and a range of balance/strengthening equipment

  • Assessment/treatment rooms with non-slip floor - all patients are assessed prior to their session to ensure the correct treatment is administered

  • Electrotherapies including laser therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)

Combining Treatments

In some cases, it is necessary for dogs to receive a combined treatment of both hydrotherapy and physiotherapy.

This can be for several reasons, but the most common situation is where muscle wastage is so great that treatment is required every day. Realistically coming for hydrotherapy treatment every day is notpractical. Patients are therefore assessed, and owners will then be provided with exercises for their pet which can be undertaken at home each day to help regain their lost muscle bulk.

During hydrotherapy treatment, a dog will be using all four legs. If one leg requires particular attention more than the others, physiotherapy treatment can be used to target specific muscle groups only.
